Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful Tips for Fire Pit

Locating Your Gas Fire Pit:

  • Place your fire pit in a location that allows you to take advantage of the best landscape views of your garden and or backyard.
  • Be aware of prevailing wind conditions.
  • Place your fire pit at least 10-feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
  • Check your owner’s manual for recommended clearance requirements for walls, structures or buildings.
  • Place your fire pit in a spot clear of hanging trees, branches, brushes, or anything else that is flammable, or overhangs.
  • Place your fire pit on rock, stone, concrete or bricks, never on wooden decks.
  • Check with management if you live in an apartment to learn the requirements and fire codes for using an LP gas outdoor fire pit in your apartment complex.
  • Choose a spot with good drainage.
  • Locate your fire pit on the southeast side of a garden as a “fire element” as part of Feng Shui design, the Taoist art and science of living in harmony with the environment.

Locating Your Wood Fire Pit:

  • Place your fireplace on the southeast side of a garden or backyard to conform to the normal positioning of the elements.
  • Don’t ignore the view and be aware of prevailing wind conditions.
  • Place your fire pit at least 10-feet away from any structure or combustible surface.
  • Do not use fire pit on wooden decks (place on rock, stone, concrete or bricks).
  • Place your fire pit in a spot clear of hanging trees, branches, brushes, or anything else that is flammable, or overhang, for example.
  • Choose a spot with good drainage.

Using Your Gas Fire Pit:

  • Always use fire pits outdoors. Never use in a building, garage or other enclosed area.
  • Never leave the fire unattended.
  • Do not allow children or animals near any outdoor fire pit.
  • Use safety gloves and tongs when interacting with fire pits such as moving ceramic logs, lava rock or fire glass.
  • Cooking on a gas fire pit is not recommended.
  • Do not burn wood in a gas fire pit.
  • Converting LP burning fire pits to natural gas is not recommended and will void the manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Check all factory connections for leaks.
  • Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable liquids or vapors in the vicinity of this or any other appliance.

Using Your Wood Fire Pit:

  • Never leave the fire unattended.
  • Always use fire pit outdoors. Never use in a building, garage or other enclosed area.
  • Do not allow children or animals near any outdoor fire pit.
  • Always have a container of water nearby and a garden hose on standby before starting a fire.
  • Use all natural products, such as Fatwood™ sticks to light your fire. Never use chemicals such as lighter fluid, kerosene or gasoline to start a fire.
  • Do not burn pressure-treated wood because it may contain harmful toxins.  Hickory and oak produce the least amount of smoke.  Good firewood options include pinion wood, alder, cedar, oak, hickory, mesquite, pecan and even fruit woods such as apple and cherry.
  • Do not overload your fireplace with too much wood while in use.
  • Use a spark guard to control sparks and burning embers.
  • Use safety gloves and tongs when interacting with fire pits, such as removing the spark guard, or adding logs.
  • Avoid using fire pit in windy conditions, which can blow embers.
  • To extinguish, allow the fire to burn itself out.  Do not use water to extinguish a fire as the extreme temperature change can damage the fire pit.

Leak Test a Gas Fire Pit Before Operating:

  • Always perform leak test before lighting the outdoor fireplace and each time the tank is connected for use.
  • Do not smoke while leak testing.
  • Do not use or permit sources of ignition in the area while conducting a leak test.
  • Conduct the leak test outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
  • Do not use matches, lighters or a flame to check for leaks.
  • Do not use an outdoor fire pit until any and all leaks are corrected.

***If you are unable to stop a leak, disconnect the LP gas supply. Call a gas appliance serviceman or your local LP gas supplier.***

LP Gas Leak Test Procedure:

  • Turn the hand wheel of the propane tank about a third of the way.
  • Apply soapy water to all connections; if a bubble appears do not use the tank.

What to Do If You Smell Gas and the Appliance is Not Lit:

  • Do not try lighting any appliance.
  • Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building.
  • Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone.
  • Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.
  • If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.

What to Do If You Smell Gas and the Appliance Is In Use:

  • Shut off gas to the appliance.
  • Extinguish any open flame.
  • Open lid.
  • If odor continues, keep away from the appliance and immediately call your gas supplier or your fire department.

LP Tank Safety Tips:

  • Never store a spare tank beneath a fire pit.
  • Always store tanks upright.
  • Never store a tank in temperatures of 125 °F or more.
  • Secure tank upright when transporting, in a well-ventilated area of your vehicle. Drive directly to where it will be used. Do not allow tank to sit in a vehicle unattended
  • Never use or store a propane tank indoors.
  • If storing fire pit indoors, disconnect tank. Move tank to a secure, well-ventilated location outdoors.
  • Do not try to repair a damaged tank or tank valve.
  • Take a damaged tank to a qualified propane supplier for repairs or disposal.
  • Ensure the tank valve handle is in the “Closed” position when the tank is not in use.
Why do I need to hold for 5 seconds?

The outdoor fireplace/fire pit uses a safety valve, call a thermocouple, that will shut off the flow of gas if there is a loss of flame.

When you turn the control knob to the “ON” position and push the control knob in, gas will flow to the burner and the thermocouple. The thermocouple is located next to the electrode and when it is heated by the flame, it generates a small electric current that will hold the valve open. You need to hold the valve in for 5 seconds once the burner is lit to allow the thermocouple time to heat up.

Can I burn wood in my outdoor fireplace/fire pit?

NO. Your outdoor fireplace/fire pit has been designed to burn only Liquid Propane. Burning real wood in your fire pit will void the warranty, and may cause serious bodily injury or death, or property damage.

Can I convert this outdoor fireplace/fire pit to natural gas?

NO. This outdoor fireplace/fire pit has been designed for use with liquid propane (LP) gas only. The conversion to or attempted use of natural gas in this outdoor fireplace is dangerous and will void your warranty and may cause serious bodily injury or death, or property damage.

What type of LP gas tank should I use?

Our outdoor fireplaces/fire pits can only be used with a standard gas grill tank equipped with a cylinder connection device compatible with the connection for outdoor cooking appliances.

The LP gas supply tank must be constructed and marked in accordance with the Specifications for LP gas Cylinders of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) or the National Standard of Canada, CAN/CSA-B339, Cylinders, Spheres and Tubes for the Transportation of Dangerous Goods; and Commission.

How long will my outdoor fireplace burn with a standard gas grill tank?

Using a standard grill gas tank, your outdoor fireplace will burn for approximately 10 hours when on the high flame setting. This is an average and you may find your tank will last longer.

Why does my product rust?

Most of our products are made from non-stainless steel.

Products made from non-stainless steel will rust over time.  Rust is the result of the oxidation of iron in the presence of water and oxygen.  Your product has a pre-painted or powder coated finish applied to the steel, but over time and with usage, this finish may deteriorate.  For best results, please perform routine maintenance on your product – see manual for cleaning instructions, and use a high quality cover if storing the unit outside.

Stainless steel items do not “rust” as you think of regular steel rusting with a red oxide on the surface that flakes off. Stainless steel will turn a yellow color over time.  This is a natural occurrence due to the heat of the fire on the stainless steel.  This can be reduced by using a high quality stainless steel polish.

If you do see some red rust it is probably due to some iron particles that have contaminated the surface of the stainless steel and it is these iron particles that are rusting. Commercially available “pickling paste” can also be used. See “Care and Cleaning of Stainless Steel” for more information.

Is rust covered under warranty?

No, rust is not covered under your manufacturer’s warranty. This warranty is only for defective parts. Lack of routine maintenance is the most common cause of rust. This can include:

  • not removing all the dirt from your stainless steel
  • not thoroughly rinsing your stainless steel after washing, and leaving some soap behind
  • not thoroughly drying your stainless steel
How to Properly Recycle/Dispose of Your Outdoor Fire Pit?

We hope you enjoyed your outdoor fire pit. When it comes time to upgrade your unit, we encourage you to dispose of your old outdoor fire pit in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

The following are guidelines to help you dispose of your outdoor fire pit safely:

CLEAN:

Before you dispose of your outdoor fire pit, you will need to thoroughly clean all surfaces of debris or residue.

SAFETY FIRST:

Wear work gloves to protect against sharp edges or burrs in the metal.

Where applicable, make sure the gas tank is off and disconnected from the regulator/hose assembly before dismantling any other parts.

Note: It may be helpful to refer to the owner’s manual to disassemble your outdoor fire pit, making sure to complete the steps in the reverse order.

RECYCLABLE:

Steel/Stainless Steel/Cast Iron/Brass/Aluminum: Once disassembled and cleaned, stainless steel, steel, cast iron, brass and aluminum parts from grills can be recycled by taking to your local scrap metal dealer or visit www.earth911.com to find a recycling center near you.

*Remove any non-metal attachments, prior to recycling.

Plastic Control Knobs: Gas control knobs are recyclable if they are made of black plastic.  Follow local municipal guidelines for plastic recycling. If they are metal plated, they should be disposed of in the standard domestic garbage waste disposal system.

Unwanted Propane Tanks: Many landfills, recycling centers, and scrap metal dealers cannot recycle unwanted tanks because of the residual propane inside. However, most propane exchange companies will take them and recycle them at no cost to you.

NOT RECYCLABLE:

Hearth (non-metal): Please dispose of with your domestic garbage waste disposal system.
Door Magnets, Logs, Lava Rocks: Please dispose of with your domestic garbage waste disposal system
Regulator/Hose Assembly: Please dispose of with your domestic garbage waste disposal system. Remember to disconnect the gas hose from the gas line and any regulator before disposing.
Batteries: Proven cost-effective and environmentally safe recycling processes are not yet universally available for alkaline batteries. Some communities offer recycling or collection of alkaline batteries—contact your local government for disposal practices in your area. Otherwise, to find a battery recycling location near you, visit www.earth911.com. Never dispose of batteries in fire as they could explode.
Electronics (i.e. igniter wires, electric controller, heating element): Check with your local municipality to find out e-waste pick-up days or drop-off locations.

Note: Keep in mind that accepted recyclables vary by municipality. Check with your local municipality to see what’s allowed and what’s not.

  • Researched and ordered my fireplace from US FIreplace Store. Pricing was a fair value however, the customer service was EXCELLENT! I had an issue with the direct vent venting. I called US Fireplace and the correct items were sent out the next day AND Janessa stayed on top of my return authorization and sent me the permissions and documents I needed to return the incorrect item and no cost to me, including return shipping. Overall, I am a very satisfied customer and my fireplace looks and operates flawlessly. I am glad that I selected US FIreplace to source my direct vent fireplace. Thank you for the great service.

  • I had placed an order, through Lowe's Home Improvement, for an Electric Firebox: Revillusion RBF42. Ordered 1st part of January. Was told I would have it in 3 weeks. When checking to see is it came in, was told it was delayed to 3/15. Was then told is was delayed until 4/25. Waited until 4/27 to check on it. Was then told it was now delayed until August. This firebox was going in a new Sun Room addition. I could not get my final inspection until the Firebox was installed. I went on line and googled for this same product. US Fireplace Store web site was given to me. This was on a Saturday. I call and reached a very nice man. Explain what I was look for. He checked and told me they had 30 of them in stock. I almost fell out of my chair. I clarified with him the product I was wanting. I ask how soon could I get it. He told me it would ship today. Again, was amazed. It arrived on the following Monday. What a pleasure and a relief working with US Fireplace Store and their employees. Exceed my expectations.
